150 Days of Halloween: I Saw the Devil

The first night of 150 Days of Halloween has concluded, and with it, I Saw the Devil.

So good!

Now, I am sick, so this will be very brief. The film is amazing, it really is. Kim Ji-woon is already a personal favorite after he made A Tale of Two Sisters, which is also on this list, and was cemented with the incredibly quirky movie The Good The Bad and the Weird. Ji-woon managed to channel another amazing Korean director for this movie, Park Chan-wook, as I Saw the Devil plays out like one Chan-wook's revenge flicks married with Ji-woon's horror.

The actors also sell this one, with The Good The Bad and the Weird's Lee Byung-hun returning to work with Ji-woon once again. He portrays a broken mans fall and deterioration into a revenge driven killer rather well, and when he is on screen, everyone else just fades away. Unless Oldboy veteran Choi Min-sik is on screen, because as always, the man is a marvel and your eyes are helpless but to follow his every move.

The movie never lets you get comfortable, it will slide from horror to thriller constantly as one character goes from being in power to watching that power slip away. I highly recommend this one to anyone. Particularly if you have enjoyed either Ji-woon or Chan-wook's films in the past.
